SEESARI and UIC Mark a Decade of Regional Railway Cooperation in Belgrade

The SEESARI–UIC High-Level Conference and UIC Regional Days, held in Belgrade, brought together railway leaders, policymakers, infrastructure managers, researchers, industry experts and international partners to celebrate the 10th anniversary of SEESARI and discuss the future of rail transport in South-East Europe.

Opening the event, SEESARI Chairman Peter Verlič highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening the railway sector. Over the past decade, SEESARI has developed into a recognized platform connecting railway undertakings, infrastructure managers, universities, research institutes and policymakers, transforming dialogue into concrete initiatives and partnerships.

Throughout the conference, participants explored key challenges and opportunities facing the railway industry, with particular focus on rail freight competitiveness, logistics, and railway modernisation. Discussions emphasized the need to increase rail’s share of freight transport, develop intermodal solutions linking rail, road and ports, strengthen cross-border connectivity across the Western Balkans, and improve cooperation between logistics providers and railway operators.

Financing railway modernisation was another central topic. Experts examined innovative funding mechanisms, public-private partnerships, investments in infrastructure, and the role of digital technologies in improving efficiency and sustainability. Participants agreed that long-term investment and regional collaboration are essential to building a modern, resilient and environmentally sustainable transport system.

A recurring theme throughout the event was the strategic importance of South-East Europe as a gateway connecting major European transport corridors and international markets. As the railway sector continues to evolve through digitalisation, artificial intelligence and sustainability-driven policies, the conference reinforced the importance of stronger regional cooperation, innovation and investment in shaping the future of rail transport.

The event concluded with a shared commitment to further strengthening railway development across the region and building on the achievements of the past ten years to create a more connected, competitive and sustainable railway network for South-East Europe.
