Future of South East Europe High Speed Rail (SEE HSR)

In January 2019, SEESARI adopted a Strategic Master Plan. Among its several strategic pillars, the High-Speed Rail was highlighted.

The high-speed lines have the following parameters:

  • Double-track rail for speeds of 200 km/h and higher (dependent on studies)
  • ETCS L2
  • GSM-R
  • Mixed terrain railway (hilly-mountain-flatland)
  • Railway for mixed traffic

The indicative SEE HSR sections and their lengths are:

  1. Vienna – Ljubljana ~ 430 km (Vienna-Klagenfurt/Graz: in construction or already planned) => new line Villach – Ljubljana: 100 km);
  2. Ljubljana – Zagreb ~ 140 km;
  3. Zagreb – Beograd ~ 400 km;
  4. Belgrade – Budapest ~ 380 km (in construction or already planned);
  5. Budapest – Bratislava ~ 200 km;
  6. Bratislava – Vienna ~ 65 km (planned);

SEESARI Task Force for SEE HSR will be established in 2024. For more information please contact peter.verlic@seesari.org.
